Instead of trash talking, the Saints extended a bit of kindness.

Trash talking is a common practice for NFL teams when the season schedule is released. Teams will often make promo videos detailing their superiority and send them to the teams they’ll be going up against. Some of these videos are surprisingly elaborate; last year, the Atlanta Falcons made an entire parody of the Game of Thrones intro to take a shot at the New Orleans Saints. Speaking of the Saints, with the scheduled released for the 2020 season (or at least a tentative schedule), they decided it was time to deploy some promo work of their own. But with circumstances being what they are, the Saints decided that instead of trolling and trash talking, the world could use a little more good will.

In a promo video posted to the team’s Twitter, the Saints stressed that though they are competitors, in the face of the pandemic, “none of that matters now.” In an act of good will to the four cities they’ll be facing off against, the team bought food for various essential workers to show their support for their hard work in tough times.

For retail workers at the Honey Bee Market in Detroit, the Saints ordered pizza from Michigan&Trumbull. For medical workers at the Swedish Covenant Hospital in Chicago, another round of pizzas from Pequod’s Pizza. For the medical workers of St. Christopher’s Hospital for Children in Philadelphia, Philly cheesesteaks from Joe’s Steaks + Soda Shop. Even for Atlanta, who ribbed them so hard last year, they bought turkey spaghetti from Kelz Kitchen for the police officers of the Atlanta PD.

The Saints reminded everyone that in difficult, disastrous times, the most important thing is to work together, hearkening back to the dark days of post-Hurricane Katrina. “When the going gets tough, the Saints Nation gets going,” the promo said. The video ends with a genuine wish of safety, as well as a quick, snarky jab: “Stay home. Stay safe. We hope to see (beat) you this fall.”
