Severe Heat to Plague West Coast Through Weekend

Temperatures in the 100s will persist through to Labor Day.

For the past several days, several of the western United States, particularly California, Nevada, Oregon, and Washington, have been subject to a sustained, severe heat wave. All of these states have been enduring temperatures of at least 100 degrees Fahrenheit, if not higher. Sadly, if you were hoping for a milder Labor Day weekend, it doesn’t look like you’ll be getting that.

Meteorologists have forecasted a continuation of these extreme heat conditions through the entirety of Labor Day weekend, if not longer. “September is kicking off with scorching temperatures throughout the western US, as highs are once again anticipated to threaten daily and even monthly records headed into Labor Day Weekend,” the Weather Prediction Center said Friday morning.

“The heat wave will pose a high to very high risk to the general population, particularly the elderly and those without adequate air conditioning, due to both the intensity of the high temperatures and duration of the heat wave,” advised the National Weather Service.

The operators of the Californian power grid are advising residents to pre-cool their homes prior to 4:00 PM Pacific time today, then work to conserve power between 4:00 PM and 9:00 PM so as not to overburden the grid.

“The Flex Alert covers that time of day when the grid is most stressed from higher demand and less solar energy,” said the California Independent System Operator.
