Stephen Colbert Brings a Bearded New Era to the Emmys

After leaving The Late Show, the comedian arrived at the 2026 Emmys with a gray goatee, a big win, and plenty of jokes about his unexpected new look.

Stephen Colbert may have closed the chapter on The Late Show, but he clearly wasn’t ready to leave the spotlight quietly.

The comedian turned heads at the 2026 Emmy Awards with a noticeably different look, stepping onto the red carpet sporting a full gray goatee. Months after The Late Show wrapped its long television run, Colbert’s facial hair quickly became one of the night’s most unexpected talking points.

Naturally, Colbert had a suitably ridiculous explanation.

During an interview backstage with E! News at the Peacock Theater, the comedian joked that his new beard wasn’t even real. Instead, he claimed it was the work of artificial intelligence, suggesting that his face could transform into something entirely different at any moment.

He even gave the unusual look a name, calling it a “beard-bot” and joking about needing to negotiate with filmmaker Michael Bay and razor giant Gillette.

But while Colbert was happy to poke fun at his appearance, the bigger reason for his Emmys excitement was much more meaningful. He and his Late Show team took home the Emmy for Outstanding Variety Series, giving the longtime host an emotional reason to celebrate.

The victory came only months after CBS ended The Late Show following an impressive 11-year run with Colbert at the helm. The program’s conclusion also marked the end of a remarkable late-night chapter for a show that brought together hundreds of writers, performers, producers, directors and behind-the-scenes creatives.

For Colbert, the Emmy wasn’t simply a personal trophy. He described it as a celebration of the enormous team that helped bring the show to life night after night.

During his acceptance speech, Colbert made a point of recognizing the more than 200 people who worked on the program over its 11-year run. He also highlighted the importance of late-night television as a training ground for young entertainment professionals, particularly those learning how to work creatively while dealing with tight deadlines and large collaborative teams.

And because this is Colbert we’re talking about, he couldn’t resist turning his heartfelt message into a practical job recommendation.

He encouraged industry professionals to consider hiring members of his former Late Show crew, jokingly presenting them as talented professionals who could make productions better — and their colleagues’ working lives easier.

The moment offered a fitting conclusion to Colbert’s Late Show era. There was recognition, gratitude, plenty of humor and, apparently, a brand-new beard.

Whether the gray goatee sticks around for the next chapter remains anyone’s guess. But if Colbert’s Emmys appearance is any indication, he’s entering life after late night with the same sense of humor that made his television run so memorable.
