Sephiroth is Coming to ‘Super Smash Bros. Ultimate’
Cue the Latin chanting.
As was the case every time prior, when Nintendo teased everyone the other day with the announcement of a new character for Super Smash Bros. Ultimate, the rumor mill began churning once again. The usual suspects began trending on Twitter, like Halo‘s Master Chief, Kingdom Hearts‘ Sora, and even some rando from Fortnite. However, it seems there’s a character we all forgot about, one that had frequently been requested in the past, but seemingly faded to the back of everyone’s minds. Well, looks like Nintendo played us like a two-dollar glockenspiel, because Final Fantasy 7‘s Sephiroth is coming to Super Smash Bros. Ultimate.
During The Game Awards last night, amid premiere trailers for new games and updates to existing ones, Nintendo dropped their trailer for the third participant in the game’s second Fighter’s Pass. The trailer didn’t give any particular hints at first, showing several characters battling with the game’s antagonist, Galeem, before Galeem is suddenly bisected from behind, implying a sword user. When the trademark black-feathered wing spread, everyone knew it could only be Cloud Strife’s eternal nemesis, Sephiroth. Cue the bombastic orchestral music and chanting.
The one-winged angel, Sephiroth from the @FINALFANTASY series, joins #SmashBrosUltimate as a DLC fighter later this month! Tune in at 2pm PT on 12/17 for a presentation from director Masahiro Sakurai all about the DLC fighter, including the release date! pic.twitter.com/zRaZCSZkrn

Official details aren’t yet available about how Sephiroth will play, but we can infer a few things from the trailer. He’s obviously got his signature gigantic katana, as well as several magical abilities like blasts of darkness and a reflection spell. He also seems to have some manner of power-up in which he unfurls his signature wing. We’ll know more about how Sephiroth works next week, as the game’s director, Masahiro Sakurai, will be hosting one of his usual character presentations on December 17. Sephiroth is slated to be added to the game before the end of the year.
Sephiroth is the third character of Fighter’s Pass 2, following ARMS‘ Min-Min and Minecraft‘s Steve and Alex. There are still three characters left, so feel free to continue your wild speculation.
