Aw jeez, looks like Jennifer Connelly wished for her brother to get abducted again…

I had a spirited debate with my dad not too long ago about what the better movie was between Labyrinth and The Dark Crystal. We agree they’re both good movies, though I prefer Labyrinth because the plot’s a little more coherent and the music is great. Man, that music. “Magic Dance” was like, the theme song to my life ages 6-9, which is weird because Labyrinth came out seven years before I was even born. Regardless, it’s a cult-classic film beloved by many, not the least of whom, apparently, is Doctor Strange director Scott Derrickson.

According to a Deadline report, Derrickson, who passed on the directorial role of Doctor Strange 2, is currently workshopping a sequel to Labyrinth. It’s at least somewhat timely, considering last year’s release of The Dark Crystal: Age of Resistance on Netflix. Derrickson will be handling the directorial role on this picture, while the script currently has screenwriter and director Maggie Levin on script-writing duty. The Jim Henson Company will be producing the picture, with CEO Lisa Henson as producer and Chairman Brian Henson as executive producer. Hopefully, their involvement will ensure the proper amount of puppetry the picture deserves.

There is, however, a massive elephant in the room: the leads. Jennifer Connelly played the original film’s protagonist, Sarah Williams, and she is still in the game if Derrickson wants to give her a call. The bigger problem is the role of the antagonist, Jareth, the Goblin King, originally played by the late, great, David Bowie, who also contributed the lion’s share of the original film’s soundtrack. No word has been given on who could fill the Goblin King’s exceptionally tight pants in Bowie’s stead, and to be honest, I’m hard-pressed to think of a candidate.

Still, if they can get the pieces together, this could be a fun idea. No idea what it’d actually be about, though. The baby in the first film is a little too old to be kidnapped by goblins again, plus he’s too busy working on The Dark Crystal: Age of Resistance. No, really, he worked on it. Look it up.
