Pink Power: How Celebrities at Met Gala 2023 Are Quietly Rebelling Against Karl Lagerfeld’s Legacy

The Met Gala 2023 has been the talk of the town, with everyone eagerly waiting for their favorite celebrity to walk the red carpet in their best outfit. But there’s another thing that caught my eye – the subtle shade being thrown at Karl Lagerfeld.

This year’s theme, “Karl Lagerfeld: A Line of Beauty,” has been the subject of much controversy, considering Lagerfeld’s past remarks about plus-sized women, anorexia, and sexual assault allegations. Unsurprisingly, some celebrities are not too keen on honoring him.

While some might think that pink was just the color of choice for many celebrities, I can’t help but wonder if it was a deliberate “side eye” to Lagerfeld. After all, he once said, “Think pink, but do not wear it!”

Plus-sized Black model Precious Lee stood out in a hot pink cape attached to her dress, which I’m sure Lagerfeld would have hated. Native American activists Quannah Chasinghorse and Quinta Brunson also appeared in pale pink gowns, and Cardi B slayed in a dress of the same color.

Even Harvey Guillén showed up in a pink suit. While we can’t say if they were all purposely shading Lagerfeld, it’s satisfying to know that his style is appropriated by people he would have probably disdained.

It’s refreshing to see some celebrities take a stance against Lagerfeld’s problematic past. While not everyone has been vocal about it, seeing these pink dresses and unapologetically curvy bodies on the red carpet is a beautiful rebellion. Lagerfeld might have been a legend in the fashion industry, but his legacy is far from perfect.
