There’s still plenty of ancient documents to steal.

National Treasure was a 2004 Disney film starring Nicholas Cage about a historian looking to steal the Declaration of Independence to find the valuable treasure map on its back. It was a pretty silly movie, and the box office wasn’t anything special, but a combination of Cage’s acting, the crazy plot, and general meme circulation have turned it into something of a cult classic. This is how Disney managed to produce a sequel to the film in 2007, why they’re currently working on a third film, announced at the beginning of the year, and why, apparently, they’re working on an entire series for Disney+.

Producer Jerry Bruckheimer spilled the beans during an interview with Collider on Thursday. “We’re certainly working on one [National Treasure] for streaming and we’re working on one for the big screen,” he said. “Hopefully, they’ll both come together and we’ll bring you another National Treasure, but they’re both very active. The one for Disney Plus is a much younger cast. It’s the same concept but a young cast. The one for theatrical would be the same cast.”

According to Bruckheimer, the creative process is actually a little further along on the show than the movie, which means we might get the former before the latter, despite the movie being announced first. “The film version is being written right now,” Bruckheimer explained. “The television version is in process. We have a pilot script done and an outline of the future episodes.”

The cast, directors, and writers for the series have not yet been divulged, nor did Bruckheimer reveal whether Nicholas Cage would be making an appearance. Cage will, however, be reprising his role as Benjamin Franklin Gates, along with an unspecified number of his previous co-stars, in the third movie, which is being produced by Bruckheimer and written by Chris Bremner.
