Mark Emmert Stepping Down as NCAA President
Emmert is out as soon as a replacement is selected.
Today, Mark Emmert, the President of the National Collegiate Athletic Association, announced alongside the rest of the association that he will be formally retiring from the role. Emmert will officially be done as soon as a replacement President is decided upon and installed, though if one isn’t selected immediately, Emmert will be out regardless by June 30, 2023.
“Throughout my tenure I’ve emphasized the need to focus on the experience and priorities of student-athletes,” Emmert said in a co-statement with the NCAA. “I am extremely proud of the work of the Association over the last 12 years and especially pleased with the hard work and dedication of the national office staff here in Indianapolis.”
“With the significant transitions underway within college sports, the timing of this decision provides the Association with consistent leadership during the coming months plus the opportunity to consider what will be the future role of the president,” NCAA board of governors chair and president of Georgetown John J. DeGioia added in a separate statement. “It also allows for the selection and recruitment of the next president without disruption.”

The NCAA is currently in the midst of several transitionary periods, changing long-held rules such as allowing athletes to change their schools without any kind of penalty at least once. Emmert and board mutually agreed that it was time for him to move on.
