Lynn wasn’t quite cutting the mustard.

2020 was a particularly unpleasant year for the Los Angeles Chargers, and not even for the same reasons as everyone else (though those were certainly a factor). No, the Chargers had a bad year because in at least seven of their games this past season, they lost by a single excruciating touchdown. That many chokes in a row, well, it gets people upset, and someone’s gotta take the blame. Apparently, that someone is Anthony Lynn, the team’s head coach of four seasons, who has just been fired.

“This morning I informed Anthony Lynn that we have made the decision to part ways with him as our head coach. I’m not sure there is another person in this league more respected as a human being than Anthony, and I want to sincerely express my deepest gratitude for his leadership during a time of great change for our organization,” team owner Dean Spanos said in a statement.

“As we all know, this is a results-driven business and, simply put, the results of the past two years have fallen short of expectations. Moving forward, we will redouble our efforts to both build and maintain a championship-caliber program. We have been innovative in many facets of our organization in recent years, and we need to carry that over to our entire operation. Our fans need to know that the Los Angeles Chargers are committed to consistent, winning football. The search for a new head coach will begin immediately.”

It’s a shame, as Lynn did have a good reputation among the players, and even managed to get them victories in their last four games. But hey, new year, new changes. With the league in such a weird place, you need all the wins you can get, and Lynn wasn’t getting ’em.
