Harley and Joker will never be a couple again, despite some fan requests.
This week saw the premier of season 3 of the animated Harley Quinn series on HBO Max. The new season picks up shortly after the end of the second season, where Harley Quinn and Poison Ivy realize their feelings for each other and officially become a couple, taking off around the world on a chaotic tour.
While many fans of the show are more than happy with the official “Harlivy” pairing, as it’s referred to in the show, there is a portion of the fanbase who would rather see Harley return to her relationship with The Joker. According to the showrunners, though, this isn’t happening any time soon.
In an interview with AV Club, showrunners Justin Halpern and Patrick Schumacker swore that Harley and Ivy will remain a couple, and Joker won’t reenter the picture. “We still have the occasional fan reaction of ‘I don’t like Harley and Ivy together. She should get back with the Joker,’ which we’re never going to do. Harley and Ivy will never break up in the series as long as we have a say. That’s something that we never want to touch again.”

“It was always a place we wanted to get to,” Schumacker said of Harley and Ivy’s relationship, “but we wanted to make sure that we were telling a story first. How is Harley figuring out her own identity? What sort of self-discovery is she doing after this relationship with the Joker, right? And so if you just had her jump right back into another relationship right after that, because the fans are like, ‘Why aren’t they together right away?’… would you want that? This person is so fucked up and just coming out of a terrible relationship. When have you ever in the history of human beings seen someone leave a terrible relationship that they’ve had for a really long time and instantly make the next relationship work perfectly? It doesn’t happen a lot. So we wanted to sort of taking our time with that.”
