Guess it’s time to let it go, huh?

Disney’s been branching out more into live-action adaptations of their popular animated properties in recent years, and that includes Broadway musicals. One of the most popular and profitable Disney franchises is, of course, Frozen, and when the Frozen musical opened on Broadway in 2018, it raked in over $2 million in ticket sales in the first week. Unfortunately, those profits have begun to cool recently, and with Broadway shuttered by the pandemic, Disney’s musical department has been forced to make some cutbacks.

It has been confirmed that the Frozen musical has officially ended its Broadway run, and will not be returning to the stage even when theaters start opening back up. This makes the performance that ran on March 11 their last one. Interestingly, despite plays not running due to the pandemic, no other shows prior had their runs officially ended, meaning Frozen is the first show to be eliminated entirely by pandemic closures.

“This difficult decision was made for several reasons but primarily because we believe that three Disney productions will be one too many titles to run successfully in Broadway’s new landscape,” Thomas Schumacher, president of Disney Theatrical Productions, said in a letter to his staff.

With money saved from Frozen‘s closure, Disney will be able to continue putting on productions of its more popular musicals, Aladdin and The Lion King, once Broadway theaters reopen. Frozen will not, however, disappear from the world stage entirely, as the costumes and props used in the show will be repurposed for international stagings in London, Sydney, Tokyo and Hamburg, Germany, over the next year.

Disney is also working on stage adaptations of some of their other major franchises, including Beauty and the Beast, The Jungle Book, and Hercules.
