What was the Enterprise like before Kirk boarded?

With the success of their new Star Trek series, Star Trek: Discovery, CBS has been looking to make the magic happen again… again. They’ll definitely need something cool to help CBS All Access stand out in the streaming wars. Based on feedback on Star Trek: Discovery, Julie McNamara, executive vice president and head of programming at CBS All Access, has a new idea: a prequel series focusing on Captain Christopher Pike, Number One, and Science Officer Spock. The three characters, played by Anson Mount, Rebecca Romijn, and Ethan Peck, respectively, garnered high fan support after their cameo in Discovery, leading to the creation of the new series, Star Trek: Strange New Worlds.

“Fans fell in love with Anson Mount, Rebecca Romijn and Ethan Peck’s portrayals of these iconic characters when they were first introduced on ‘Star Trek: Discovery’ last season,” said McNamara told Variety. “This new series will be a perfect complement to the franchise, bringing a whole new perspective and series of adventures to ‘Star Trek.’”

Strange New Worlds will take place about a decade before James T. Kirk takes command of the USS Enterprise and follow Pike, Spock, and Number One as they pursue the ship’s endless mission on their own terms. The premiere episode was written by Akiva Goldsman with the story by Goldsman, Alex Kurtzman and Jenny Lumet. Goldsman, Kurtzman and Lumet, along with Henry Alonso Myers, Heather Kadin, Rod Roddenberry and Trevor Roth will be acting as executive producers of the show.

“This is a dream come true, literally,” said Goldsman. “I have imagined myself on the bridge of the Enterprise since the early 1970s. I’m honored to be a part of this continuing journey along with Alex, Henry and the fine folks at CBS.”
