As punishment for its ongoing invasion of Ukraine, the EU is clamping down on Russian fuel.

This past weekend, as part of a two-pronged effort to punish Russia for its ongoing invasion of Ukraine and reduce their dependency on its energy, the European Union officially enacted a ban on all Russian fuel imports. The imports will still be allowed to travel through EU territories to countries like China and India, but the use of the fuel will not be permitted in EU countries.

The purpose of this particular ban is to deny funds to Russia and reduce dependency on its fuel without causing a major price fluctuation in the global fuel economy. “Once we have these price caps set, we can squeeze the Russian price and deny them, deny Putin money for his war without a price spike that’s going to hurt Western economies and developing economies,” Thomas O’Donnell, a global fellow with the Washington-based Wilson Center, told the Associated Press.

The EU’s countries have also set a price cap on Russian fuels passing through. The price is roughly the same as what Russian fuel currently trades for, so it won’t have an immediate impact on the global economy, but as time passes, Russia will gradually lose money on its own if it doesn’t find new customers.
