It’s odd how consistently this happens.

Let me lay some retail lingo on you here: an SKU, or “stock-keeping unit,” is what retailers use to keep track of their products, old, new, and upcoming. In the case of video game retailers like GameStop, when they get the word from publishers that some new games are coming out, they create several blank SKUs in their product database to accommodate them. This is supposed to be a secret, but over the last several years, GameStop SKUs have leaked multiple times. While this doesn’t tell customers precisely what new games are coming, it does tell them new games are coming period, which is plenty to get the hype thrusters firing and plenty to give publisher execs a headache. Guess what? They did it again.

Unconfirmed images of GameStop’s product database that have been floating around for the last few days indicate the existence of several unannounced Nintendo Switch games. The SKUs are blank, as one would expect, but they all have placeholder dates of December 31, 2020, which indicates they will be out before the year ends, and more interestingly, prices set at $59.99, which indicates they could be big-name, first-party Nintendo releases.

In addition to the SKUs, an internal memo from GameStop was leaked stating that Nintendo’s services will be undergoing maintenance on Tuesday, July 14. Those allegedly familiar with GameStop’s practices claim these kinds of memos only go out right before Nintendo hosts a large presentation. With this memo and the SKUs combined, the writing on the wall seems to point to a Nintendo Direct presentation in the very near future.

Neither Nintendo nor GameStop have commented on this rumor. If they’re true, they would back recently-circulating rumors that Nintendo plans to hold a presentation some time this month. However, some reports allegedly from Nintendo’s side have surfaced recently that Nintendo is planning on scrapping the Direct presentation model due to complications caused by the pandemic. Hopefully, if they have something to say, they’ll say it soon.
