If she doesn’t scare you, no evil thing will.

Out of the entire stable of Disney movie villains, Cruella de Vil of 101 Dalmatians was always one of the more down-to-earth ones, relatively speaking. She doesn’t have any superpowers or grand schemes, she’s just an insane fashion mogul with an affinity for animal products. Her tendencies certainly border on cartoonish, but compared to the likes of say, Jafar or Maleficent, there’s definitely still a human element about her. How did this woman become so murderously obsessed with animal skins? Well, that’s what Disney’s looking to explore.

The existence of a Cruella de Vil movie was teased last year, but today, we got a little glimpse of her newest incarnation. On the film’s official Twitter, Disney posted a poster depicting Emma Stone in the eponymous role of Cruella, a prequel film set an indeterminate period before 101 Dalmatians that details de Vil’s early career and her descent into fashion-induced madness. Not only did Disney unveil this poster, but in the tweet itself, they announced that a teaser trailer will be arriving tomorrow, February 17.

Alongside Emma Stone as Cruella, the film is slated to feature Emma Thompson as the Baroness, head of a prolific fashion house in London. Other notable cast members include Joel Fry, Paul Walter Hauser, Emily Beecham, and Mark Strong, with I, Tonya director Craig Gillespie in the director’s chair.

The only remaining uncertainty about Cruella is whether or not it will release on Disney+. The film is currently marked for a May 28 release, but Disney has yet to make a concrete decision on whether the film will release in theaters, on Disney+, or both, likely due to continuing uncertainty about the remaining length of the COVID-19 pandemic. Their ultimate decision could rely heavily on the performance of Raya and the Last Dragon when it releases on Disney+ in March. If that film does well, Disney could decide to play it safe and stick to their streaming service in order to ensure as many people see the film as possible.
