This will be the first Netflix stand-up special to be live-streamed.

One of Netflix’s major avenues of original entertainment has been solo stand-up specials. For years now, the streaming platform has contracted a myriad of stand-up comedians, both newcomers and veterans, to either record their touring shows for them or even perform an exclusive stand-up set. Even during the COVID-19 pandemic lockdown, comedians were still performing Netflix specials, some opting to perform from their homes.

Veteran comedian, actor, and writer Chris Rock has performed his share of Netflix stand-up specials before, but early next year, he’s slated to perform something entirely new: a live-streamed stand-up set. For the very first time in its history, Netflix will be live-streaming a stand-up comedy special with Rock as the headliner.

“Chris Rock is one of the most iconic and important comedic voices of our generation,” Robbie Praw, Netflix’s vice president of stand-up and comedy formats, said in a statement. “We’re thrilled the entire world will be able to experience a live Chris Rock comedy event and be a part of Netflix history. This will be an unforgettable moment and we’re so honored that Chris is carrying this torch.”

A precise date for the event has not yet been set, but Netflix is shooting to run it sometime in early 2023. Rock, meanwhile, is still in the midst of his Ego Death World Tour comedy tour, visiting and performing in venues around the world. His next shows, coming in December, are set for California, with guest appearances scheduled by his friend and fellow comedian Dave Chappelle.
