Organizers are hoping to prevent incidents of unruly behavior at games.

The 2022 FIFA World Cup gets underway this Sunday, with major soccer games to be held at stadiums around the world. One of the World Cup locales, however, has decided to make a change to this year’s games in the hopes of preventing unruly behavior from breaking out.

Qatar announced today that, in a decision reached with FIFA’s committee, the sale of alcoholic beverages will be prohibited within the confines of their World Cup stadiums.

“Following discussions between host country authorities and FIFA, a decision has been made to focus the sale of alcoholic beverages on the FIFA Fan Festival, other fan destinations and licensed venues, removing the sales points of beer from Qatar’s FIFA World Cup 2022 stadium perimeters,” FIFA said in a statement.

As the statement says, spectators will still be able to purchase drinks at designated fan sales areas outside of the stadium proper, but no alcohol sales will be permitted within. The decision to halt sales came after FIFA struck a deal with the World Cup’s sponsor, Budweiser, after concerns began to arise from local organizers.

“There is no impact to the sale of Bud Zero which will remain available at all Qatar’s World Cup stadiums,” FIFA added.

“Host country authorities and FIFA will continue to ensure that the stadiums and surrounding areas provide an enjoyable, respectful and pleasant experience for all fans.

“The tournament organisers appreciate AB InBev’s understanding and continuous support to our joint commitment to cater for everyone during the FIFA World Cup Qatar 2022.”
