Kane hopes to recover from an ankle injury before taking on the US soccer team.

The World Cup is in full swing, with soccer teams from around the world going head to head to be the best of the best. England’s team has been putting on a good show in its first few games, beating Iran 6-2 on Monday, but during that game, their captain sustained a heavy injury.

England team captain Harry Kane sustained an injury to his right ankle during the game that was severe enough to warrant a substitution. Kane has had a history of ankle problems, but in public statements since this injury, he has downplayed the severity of this particular injury. He underwent a CAT scan following Monday’s game as a precautionary measure, but both he and his team are optimistic that he’ll be up and ready in time for their next game against the United States.

“I think he’s good,” goalkeeper Jordan Pickford said of Kane. “Probably feeling a little bit sore but I think he’s fine, he was out with us on the grass today so that’s good. He’s our captain and I think he’s fine.”

Prior to his substitution in Monday’s game, Kane contributed to two assists, and afterward, his teammates promptly picked up the slack. “Everyone will take their chance,” Pickford said. “When Harry came off, Callum [Wilson] came on and played really well, got the assist for Jack [Grealish], he was really unselfish and gave Jack his goal.

“Everyone is training really hard. Everyone’s here for a reason: to play football. But obviously Harry is an unbelievably player. He sets the example in the squad. He’s the leader, he’s the captain. We all look up to him. But there are also opportunities for other lads as well.”
