The reliably strong team is having a decidedly off season.

While I’m not a fan of the New York Yankees, I can at least admit that the are one of the most reliably competent teams of the MLB, right up there with the Red Sox. Or at least, they usually are, but for whatever reason, this current season has been an absolute body blow to the usually high-flying New Yorkers.

On Sunday night, the Yankees played against the Philadelphia Phillies, and ended up being completely shut out with an end score of 7 to Jack-nothing. With such a devastating loss marring their record, the Yankees have now been relegated to fourth place in the eastern division of the American League, a good 8.5 games behind the current front runners, the Tampa Bay Rays. While the Yankees have won 33 games this season, they’ve lost nearly as many at 32. Even in general statistics, the Yankees are lagging, with a hit average of .234 and an RBI of 231. Compared to the league leads in batting, the Houston Astros, who have an average of .274 with an RBI of 339, it’s just not cutting the mustard.

It’s getting to the point that the team’s manager, Aaron Boone, is officially concerned with how his team is handling things. “We’ve got to find a way to get better. We’re gonna find out what kind of character we’re made of. We’re clearly in the midst of incredibly tough times. We’ve faced it this season and we’re gonna find out if we’re the team we think we are,” Boone said during the post-game press conference.

“It starts with me setting the tone and setting the culture here. Hopefully we’re putting them in a good position to go out and perform at the highest level. We have not done that well enough,” he added.

Starting tomorrow, the Yankees will begin a three-day Away stint against the Toronto Blue Jays.
