A new plaque commemorates one of the most memorable swings in the US Open.

The 2021 US Open golf tournament begins today, July 17, and runs until Sunday, July 20 at Torrey Pines golf course in San Diego, California. Prior to the beginning of the games, the mayor of San Diego, Todd Gloria, along with City Council President Jen Campbell, held a ceremony to both kick off the games and commemorate one of its most memorable moments.

During the ceremony, Mayor Gloria unveiled a new plaque for the course commemorating the 2008 US Open, in which legendary golfer Tiger Woods sank a nearly impossible shot to maintain his place in the tournament and, ultimately, take home the trophy, and all on an injured leg at that.

“Playing on a fractured leg, Tiger Woods sank a 12-foot birdie putt on the 72nd hole to force a playoff with Rocco Mediate. Woods defeated Mediate in 19 holes the following day to win his third U.S. Open,” the plaque reads. Above the description, a Woods’ famous quote, “Expect anything different?” is also displayed.

Sadly, due to his severe leg injury caused by a nasty car crash back in February, Woods himself will not be attending the US Open this year. Most recent sightings place him recovering in his home in Florida after two stints in Los Angeles hospitals, though he was recently spotted at a Los Angeles airport last week in a cast and compression having difficulty walking.

Representatives of the US Open have repeatedly contacted Woods to request his presence as a commentator during the game’s televised coverage, but so far, he has refused all of these offers.
