According to the reports, the former President paid no income tax in his last year in office.

Ever since he announced his candidacy for the United States Presidency and well after, former President Donald Trump’s taxes have been a subject of intense debate and scrutiny. After he was elected into office, Trump broke a longstanding Presidential tradition by refusing to release his tax returns, claiming that they were tied up in IRS audits. This week, as part of an ongoing investigation into his finances as part of several criminal investigations, Trump’s tax returns have been unsealed.

The House Ways and Means Committee announced they would release the returns on Tuesday, and shortly after, the Joint Committee on Taxation released a report on what was found within the returns. According to the returns, Trump paid $1.1 million in federal taxes in the middle of his Presidency in 2018 and 2019. However, this is in stark contrast to the mere $750 he paid in 2017 and the confusing $0 he paid in 2020.

In addition to increased scrutiny on Trump’s finances, the report has also turned up the heat on the IRS, whom the House Ways and Means Committee have claimed did not do their due diligence in properly auditing Trump’s finances while he was in office.

“The research that was done as it relates to the mandatory audit program was nonexistent,” Chairman Richard Neal told reporters after the committee hearing.

More information about the tax returns are expected to be released over the next several days.
