And you thought the X-Men were dysfunctional.

In February of 2019, Netflix premiered a new original series, The Umbrella Academy, following the adult lives of an adoptive family of childhood superheroes. The show did fairly well for itself, currently holding a 75% on Rotten Tomatoes with an 86% audience score. It did, however, end on a pretty sizable cliffhanger (no spoilers, don’t worry), so fans have been wondering when we’d be getting another season. Turns out the answer is July 31.

Netflix released an official announcement trailer today announcing the second season’s release date. The trailer features the main cast in their homes dancing to Tiffany’s “I Think We’re Alone Now,” a reference to one of the first season’s most memorable moments.

If you missed the boat on the first season, here’s a quick summary: based on the comic book series written by Gerard Way, The Umbrella Academy is about a group of superhumans who were born at precisely the same time to random women around the world in October 1989. These children are adopted by mysterious billionaire Reginald Hargreeves, who grooms them into a superhero team known as The Umbrella Academy. Years later, the children have grown up, each forced to live with their strange abilities and coping in various (mostly unhealthy) ways. When they receive word that Hargreeves has died, they return to their childhood home for his funeral, only to be wrapped up in a mystery that spans time and space. That’s pretty much all I can say without getting into spoilers, but trust me, it’s a pretty great show. The main cast consists of Ellen Page, Tom Hopper, David Castañeda, Emmy Raver-Lampman, Robert Sheehan, and Aidan Gallagher. For the second season, they’ll be joined by new characters played by Ritu Arya, Yusuf Gatewood and Marin Ireland.
