Jetpacks and blasters will never stop being profitable.

Last week, Disney+’s breakout Star Wars-adjacent series, The Mandalorian, aired its season 2 finale. I haven’t seen it, as I don’t have Disney+, but from what I’ve heard across Twitter and such, it was a pretty big deal. The Mandalorian, with its cool protagonist and extremely marketable baby Yoda, has proved to be an unprecedented windfall for Disney and LucasFilm. A third season is, unsurprisingly, already in the works, but what’s the point of banking on a single series when you can bank on two series?

Jon Favreau, executive producer on The Mandalorian, announced today that the series will be receiving a spin-off series, also set to air on Disney+, titled The Book of Boba Fett. As the title no doubt lets on, this new series will focus on the infamous Boba Fett, Mandalorian bounty hunter made iconic by the original Star Wars trilogy in the 1980s. The timing for this new series is somewhat somber however, as Jeremy Bulloch, the man who played Boba Fett in The Empire Strikes Back, passed from complications related to Parkinson’s Disease last week at the age of 75. In his place, Temuera Morrison will be assuming the mantle of Boba Fett, alongside Ming-Na Wen as Fennec Shand.

The exact release date of this new show is still somewhat up in the air, with the pandemic no doubt complicating matters. Nevertheless, according to Favreau, the production team is shooting for a December 2021 release. Presumably, filming for The Book of Boba Fett will run concurrently with filming for the third season of The Mandalorian, which is also slated to begin some time in 2021.
