‘The Far Side’s’ Gary Larson Returns to the Comic Business
There’s about to be a whole lot more cows in your life.
Connoisseurs of newspaper comics will no doubt recall Gary Larson’s The Far Side, the short-form strip that ran in the funny pages from 1980 to 1995. It was an unusual comics, filled with wordplay, deadpan deliveries, and a lot of cows. Larson drew new strips almost every day during the comic’s fifteen year tenure, but finally ended its syndication in ’95 and retired. He’s been mostly quiet since then, though he did launch a Far Side website and filled it with his backlog of old strips. It seems, though, the legendary cartoonist has finally felt the urge to draw once again, because earlier in the week, The Far Side returned.
Larson opened a new section on the website aptly titled “New Stuff,” and has been uploading new daily strips since Tuesday. According to his explanation on the New Stuff section, this isn’t necessarily him coming fully out of retirement; he admits that the major reason he retired to begin with was being fed up with deadlines, and he’s in no hurry to impose them on himself once again. Rather, the new strips are a result of Larson’s newfound interest in digital art, brought on by an irritatingly frequent clog in his favorite ink pen.
“So a few years ago — finally fed up with my once-loyal but now reliably traitorous pen — I decided to try a digital tablet,” Larson wrote. “I knew nothing about these devices but hoped it would just get me through my annual Christmas card ordeal. I got one, fired it up, and lo and behold, something totally unexpected happened: Within moments, I was having fun drawing again. I was stunned at all the tools the thing offered, all the creative potential it contained. I simply had no idea how far these things had evolved.”
While he has uploaded new strips every day since returning, Larson has stressed that this is more of an experimental thing for him, so there may not be new content every single day. Still, any content from a legendary cartoonist is worth looking at, so if you’re in need of a laugh, The Far Side is here for you.
