The Hall of Famer is pursuing a new avenue in the sport.

According to ESPN, Steve Nash, formerly of the Phoenix Suns, Dallas Mavericks and Los Angeles Lakers, has officially signed on for a four-year stint as the head coach of the Brooklyn Nets. Nash is quite a big deal veteran of basketball, having earned the title of NBA MVP twice, getting named as All-Star eight times, and securing himself in the Hall of Fame.

“I am honored to have this opportunity with such a first-class organization and would like to thank Sean, Joe and his wife, Clara, for having faith in my ability to lead this team forward,” said Nash in a press release. “Coaching is something I knew I wanted to pursue when the time was right, and I am humbled to be able to work with the outstanding group of players and staff we have here in Brooklyn. I am as excited about the prospects of the team on the court as I am about moving to Brooklyn with my family and becoming impactful members of this community,” Nash said.

It’s a good thing Nash is so eager, because he doesn’t actually have any coaching experience. However, he does have a quality history in a leadership position, as well as a good eye for basketball technique, so it shouldn’t take him too long to pick up the basics of coaching. The Nets are certainly chuffed to have him on board.

“We are excited to welcome Steve to the Nets family and look forward to a successful and meaningful partnership,” said Nets Governor Joe Tsai. “Steve shares our vision for the future of this franchise and his character exemplifies the core principles of our organization in working to serve our communities. I can’t wait for Steve to get started.”

In addition to Nash, the Nets will be retaining their lead assistant coach, Jacque Vaughn, in his position. As an interesting aside, with this announcement, Vaughn is now the highest-paid assistant coach in the entire NBA.
