A little holiday cheer for the brave folks out there.

To say the COVID-19 pandemic has worn on the United States’ collective mental state would be an astronomical understatement. People are getting sick en masse, tensions are running high, and a cloud of uncertainty has hovered over daily life. Thankfully, according to the latest reports, viable vaccine candidates may be here within the month, which means this long nightmare may be over soon. But let’s take a moment to recognize the brave folks out there who put themselves on the front line to ensure that the rest of us could still have some semblance of a normal life these long months. I think they’ve earned a free cup of coffee at the absolute least, don’t you?

Starbucks Coffee announced today that as a show of holiday good will, anyone who has spent the pandemic period working as a front line first responder will be able to redeem a free tall brewed coffee, hot or iced, at any Starbucks location. This promotion will run the entire duration of December.

“Our hope with this is to reignite the movement of gratitude and to show those on the front line how much they are appreciated,” Virginia Tenpenny, Starbucks vice president of global social impact, said in an interview with USA TODAY. “For us, we believe that one way we can do this is by offering a free cup of coffee.”

If you’re employed in one of the following positions, you can get your free drink by visiting a Starbucks location and identifying yourself as a first responder. The accepted positions include: doctors, nurses, public health workers, pharmacists, dispatchers, firefighters, paramedics, police officers, dentists and dental hygienists, mental health workers (therapist, psychologist, social worker, counselor, etc.), hospital staff such as janitors, housekeeping/security, and active-duty military.

“Hopefully other brands will join us in thinking about how can they use their platform to again show support,” Tenpenny said. “Little deposits in morale can really go a long way, just so that they feel the support from our community.”
