A memorable night at the 98th Academy Awards brought historic achievements, emotional victories, a surprise tie, and a powerful Best Actor win for Michael B. Jordan as Hollywood celebrated the best in film.

Los Angeles sparkled with excitement on Sunday night as the 98th Academy Awards lit up the iconic Dolby Theatre, delivering a night packed with surprises, heartfelt speeches, and a few unforgettable firsts. With beloved comedian Conan O’Brien returning as host, Hollywood’s biggest celebration of cinema turned into an evening fans won’t soon forget.

The biggest honor of the night—Best Picture—went to One Battle After Another, directed by Paul Thomas Anderson. After months of awards-season buzz and an intense race with the blockbuster horror hit Sinners, Anderson’s film ultimately claimed the Academy’s top prize. The movie also ended the evening as the most awarded title, taking home six Oscars overall.

Standing Ovation for Michael B. Jordan

One of the most emotional moments of the night came when Michael B. Jordan won Best Actor for his powerful dual performance in Sinners. The audience rose to their feet in applause as Jordan accepted the award, marking a major milestone in his career.

Jordan’s win came after a dramatic awards-season race that initially favored Timothée Chalamet for Marty Supreme, but the momentum shifted late in the season following Jordan’s victory at the Screen Actors Guild Awards.

Historic First for Cinematography

History was made when cinematographer Autumn Durald Arkapaw became the first woman ever to win the Oscar for Best Cinematography, honored for her work on Sinners. The milestone marked a significant step forward for representation behind the camera.

A Surprise No-Show

Another headline-grabbing moment came in the Best Supporting Actor category. Legendary actor Sean Penn won for his role in One Battle After Another—but he wasn’t in the room to accept the award. Reports indicated the actor was traveling in Ukraine for humanitarian work at the time of the ceremony.

A Tie and Several First-Time Wins

This year’s Oscars also featured a rare twist when the Best Live-Action Short category ended in a tie, with The Singers and Two People Exchanging Saliva sharing the honor.

Another groundbreaking achievement came when casting director Cassandra Kulukundis won the first-ever Oscar for Best Casting for her work on One Battle After Another.

Acting Highlights and Major Awards

The acting categories showcased exceptional talent across the industry. Jessie Buckley took home Best Actress for her performance in Hamnet, while veteran star Amy Madigan earned Best Supporting Actress for Weapons—more than four decades after receiving her first Oscar nomination.

International cinema also had a strong showing, with Norway’s Sentimental Value winning Best International Feature Film.

Music, Animation and Documentary Winners

The animated adventure KPop Demon Hunters proved to be a fan favorite, winning Best Animated Feature and also taking Best Original Song for the energetic track “Golden.”

Meanwhile, the documentary category honored Mr Nobody Against Putin as Best Documentary Feature, while All the Empty Rooms captured Best Documentary Short.

Honoring Legends of the Industry

Ahead of the ceremony, the Academy also celebrated industry icons with special honors. Actor Tom Cruise, performer and choreographer Debbie Allen, and production designer Wynn Thomas received Academy Honorary Awards.

Music legend Dolly Parton was presented with the Jean Hersholt Humanitarian Award for her decades of charitable work, including her widely celebrated children’s literacy initiative.

A Night to Remember

From groundbreaking wins and emotional speeches to unexpected twists, the 2026 Oscars delivered an unforgettable celebration of storytelling and artistry. With historic achievements and rising stars sharing the spotlight, Hollywood’s biggest night once again proved why the Academy Awards remain one of the most anticipated events in the world of entertainment.
