Wilson expressed support for the controversial play.

Russel Wilson, one of the newest players for the Denver Broncos, played his first game for the team last night. Wilson is a popular player, and a big investment considering the Broncos had to trade five draft picks and three players to get him. It’s for this reason that fans were so confused that the coach didn’t put this new all-star player into action during the game, instead opting for a borderline impossible field goal.

With 20 seconds left in the game, rather than letting Wilson attempt a run at fourth-and-5, Broncos coach Nathaniel Hackett instead chose to have place kicker Brandon McManus attempt a 64-yard field goal to tie the game. The kick missed, and the Broncos lost 17-16.

“We were right on the line [of McManus’ range],” Hackett said after the game. “… Brandon gave it his best shot. … obviously, I wish we would have gotten a lot closer, it put us in that weird spot because we were in that field goal range. … We just made that decision and take our shot there.”

Fans have expressed frustration with the decision, insisting that having Wilson go for the conversion was the right move. However, Wilson has opted to stick with his coach’s gut on the matter. We got the best field goal kicker maybe in the game,” Wilson said. “… We got there and unfortunately it didn’t go in. … I believe in coach Hackett, I believe in what we’re doing, I believe in everything.”

“I don’t think it was the wrong decision.”

When asked about the negative fan reaction, Wilson said “It didn’t bother me.”

“It was a hostile environment; it always has been. I didn’t expect to get a round of applause every once in a while. I gave everything I had here every day, every day, and anybody that says anything else, they’re completely wrong.”
