Washington’s NFL team is inching closer to a compromise.

The Washington Redskins have been a controversial team for years now, what with their logos and merchandise co-opting the image of Native Americans and using a name long considered to be a racial slur. When the racial discrimination protests started flaring up, though, the controversy was once again brought into sharp focus, and it doesn’t look like the team is getting out of this one unchanged.

Various retail companies have been pulling Redskins merchandise off of shelves, and multiple high-profile investors have threatened to pull their funding, both with the same desire: lay off the Native Americans, or no deal. Dan Snyder and his associates have been trying to work out a deal to change the team’s image and get the money flowing again. According to ESPN’s Adam Schefter, a plan is currently in motion.

“In their discussions about a potential new name, Washington is planning to have no Native American imagery, per a league source,” Schefter wrote on his Twitter. That report was followed up by another ESPN reporter, John Keim, who added that the team is planning on keeping their signature burgundy and gold colors.

Scrapping the Native American imagery would go a long way toward solving the problem, but that still leaves the issue of the name. Redskins quarterback Dwayne Haskins offered one intriguing suggestion: the Redtails. This name would be a tribute to the Tuskegee Airmen of World War II, the very first black pilots in the United States Army. Several of these airmen were from Washington, if you were curious of the connection.

A former tight-end for the Redskins, Doc Walker, offered another suggestion: the Warriors. “All you have to do is put the arrow back on the helmet. You don’t have to change anything else. Warriors on the warpath, fight for old D.C. It’s that simple.”

Despite rumors and rumblings, no official decisions have been made just yet.
