Several high-rollers have grouped up in a bid to buy the unlucky team.

As someone who comes from a family of Mets fans, I can say this with confidence: being a Mets fan is suffering. I’ve been going to Mets games for over twenty years, and out of every single one of the games I’ve attended in person, they have not won once (though I do still enjoy going to the stadium). It is for this reason that I’ve come to the conclusion that no matter who owns the team, it can’t possibly be any worse than what we currently deal with. Jennifer Lopez wants the Mets? Sure, why not.

A group of five high-profile investors have teamed up and announced their intent to put a bid down on the New York Mets, which is slated to go up for sale soon by the team’s owner, Jeff Wilpon. The all-star five is composed of former New York Yankees player Alex Rodriguez, his fiance Jenifer Lopez, Super Bowl champion Travis Kelce, 2014 NFL Offensive Player of the Year DeMarco Murray, and Hall of Fame linebacker Brian Urlacher. Not sure why there’s so many football players interested in buying a baseball team, but hey, whatever. Collectively, the five have pooled together an initial bid of $1.7 billion, $300 million of which comes from Rodriguez and Lopez alone.

However, this sizable bid actually isn’t currently the largest one on the table. Hedge fund billionaire Steve Cohen currently has the biggest finger on the button with an initial bid of $2 billion. Other high-profile candidates include Denver Nuggets center Mason Plumlee, Hall of Fame offensive lineman Joe Thomas, and two-time NBA All-Star Bradley Beal. Despite the impressive pedigree knocking on his door, though, Wilpon has actually expressed higher interest in selling to the Rodriguez-Lopez group, provided they can pony up a bid close to the best one by the end of the auction.

Wilpon and the investors are currently waiting for the go-ahead from MLB Commissioner Rob Manfred to get the next step in the bidding process started.
