Because… you demanded it?

Earlier in the week, Nintendo and The Pokemon Company announced they would hold a brief presentation on Wednesday morning to reveal some new mystery project. The internet got excited, as it tends to, with numerous hopes held out that we would finally receive the remakes of the Sinnoh games that we’ve been asking for for that last few years.

We are not getting the remakes of the Sinnoh games.

No, instead, we are getting Pokemon Unite, a MOBA strategy game for Switch and mobile in a similar vein to League of Legends and DOTA. Because those are still trendy, right? Right?

The disappointment at the initial reveal was already pretty notable, but for many users, that disappointment turned to outright vitriol when it was revealed who The Pokemon Company would be collaborating with to make this game happen: Tencent Holdings, the controversial Chinese super-company with its fingers in an increasing number of game industry pies. Tencent has also had a hand in numerous mobile games with an extremely heavy emphasis on microtransactions, making them deeply unpopular with the current gaming market.

As for Pokemon Unite itself, it’s your typical 5-on-5 battle arena; capture some flags, blast some other players, been there, done that, bought the t-shirt. Ten playable Pokemon have been confirmed so far: Charizard, Snorlax, Pikachu, Lucario, Clefable, Venusaur, Gengar, Blastoise, Talonflame and Machamp. Each Pokemon will also have powerful “Unite Moves,” though details on individual ones aren’t currently available.

No word on when Pokemon Unite will actually launch, though Tencent did clarify that the game will be free-to-start, meaning you can play it for free for a little while before you need to cough up to keep going. Yay.
