‘No Time to Die’ Receives New Release Date
Daniel Craig’s final Bond movie will hit a bit earlier than expected.
The newest James Bond film, as well as Daniel Craig’s final time in the role of the world-famous super spy, No Time to Die, was originally supposed to hit theaters on April 10, 2020. Then the pandemic happened, and all of the theaters closed. Universal has been quietly scoping out possible return dates since, unlike some other big blockbusters, they didn’t want to release the film for home streaming. Since movie theaters are planning to open again in July, Universal announced plans to release the film on Thanksgiving Weekend, November 25. After some internal debate, however, they decided to move the schedule up a bit.
Universal announced today that No Time to Die will hit theaters a week earlier than anticipated on November 20, 2020. No specific reason for the move-up has been given, though fans have speculated on a couple of possibilities. One possibility is audience turnout; unlike other holidays, American families don’t typically go to the movies on Thanksgiving, which could affect audience turnout. Another theory that’s been circulating is that Universal moved the movie up in order to beat out Warner Bros. upcoming Godzilla Vs. Kong, which is coming out the day after on November 21.

Business analysts have noted that Universal may be missing out on a film industry milestone by moving the release up. If No Time to Die were to release on Thanksgiving weekend and turn a good profit, it could have set a box office record for highest grossing live action film released on a Thanksgiving weekend. If it brought in at least $163 million, it would beat the current record holder, 2019’s Knives Out. Oddly specific record, yes, but records are records. Now, though, the film will have to earn acclaim on its own, which shouldn’t be too difficult since, y’know, James Bond.
