Time to learn what happened 100 years ago.

If you haven’t played The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild, a prominent element in the game’s story is a large-scale war against the forces of Ganon that takes place 100 years prior. The thing is, while we get glimpses of the preparations for that war and the people Link knew, they were just that: glimpses, not the full story. It seems Nintendo would like to finally tell this story, and in the most-action packed way possible.

Yesterday, Nintendo dropped a surprise reveal trailer for Hyrule Warriors: Age of Calamity, a prequel to Breath of the Wild that will frame the preparation for the big punch-up and the punch-up itself as a Musou-style action game. As with the original Hyrule Warriors, co-created by Koei Tecmo and ported from the Wii U as a launch title for the Nintendo Switch, the game will have a greater emphasis on large-scale battles against hordes of enemies, though according to Nintendo, there will also be some environmental puzzle solving and crafting in a similar vein to Breath of the Wild. Interestingly, instead of using the game engine Koei Tecmo used for Hyrule Warriors, Age of Calamity is being built from the ground up in Breath of the Wild‘s engine in order to preserve the original’s tone and art style.

The game will feature six playable characters: Link, Princess Zelda, and the four Champions, Daruk, Urbossa, Revali, and Mipha. This won’t just be a token story either; in Nintendo’s own words, Age of Calamity will feature “a robust story that depicts the events, relationships and dramatic moments of the Great Calamity in captivating detail.”

Hyrule Warriors: Age of Calamity is set for release on November 20, 2020 for $59.99. Both physical and digital editions are already available for preorder, though if you get the digital version, you’ll also receive a soup ladle weapon for Link as a silly bonus.
