Netflix Producing Live-Action ‘Assassin’s Creed’ Series

Hey, it worked for The Witcher.

It’s a strange time we live in. I mean, for a variety of reasons, obviously, but the particular reason I’m thinking of is the sudden resurgence of video game-inspired movies and television. With all the box office bombs produced in the 80s, you’d think producers wouldn’t touch these properties with a ten-foot pole, but not only have game-inspired movies and shows been churned out, some of them have actually been pretty good. Sonic the Hedgehog got a good reception, and The Witcher is killing it on Netflix. It’s as good a time as any to keep the stream flowing, even if we’ve tried some of these properties already.


Netflix announced on their Twitter today that they will be teaming up with game publisher Ubisoft to produce a live-action series based on the Assassin’s Creed franchise. Since the series covers such a wide swath of settings and time periods, there’s a lot of potential for some fascinating and diverse stories.

“From its breathtaking historical worlds and massive global appeal as one of the best selling video game franchises of all time, we are committed to carefully crafting epic and thrilling entertainment based on this distinct IP and provide a deeper dive for fans and our members around the world to enjoy,” said Netflix original series vice president Peter Friedlander in a prepared statement.

The show’s still very much in its infant stages, however; nobody’s even been tapped as showrunner yet, to say nothing of a specific plot or setting. But with Netflix’s zeal in expanding The Witcher, as well as their recently confirmed Resident Evil take, they’ll probably have someone capable on deck soon enough. If nothing else, it can’t be any worse than the 2016 Assassin’s Creed movie.
