You can probably guess why at this point.

It’s Opening Day for Major League Baseball! The teams are getting hyped up for another season of baseball, hopefully this time with less cancellations, postponements, and sickness. Every team in the league will be playing a game today, with Opening Day tickets including the New York Yankees versus the Toronto Blue Jays, the Chicago White Sox versus Los Angeles Angels, and more. However, there are two teams that’ll be missing out on the festivities, and wouldn’t you know it, it’s because of our old friend COVID-19. So much for less postponements and sickness.

The League announced today that the Opening Day game between the New York Mets and the Washington Nationals has been postponed indefinitely due to COVID-related complications. Specifically, an undisclosed number of Nationals players tested positive for the disease and are now being quarantined, while the League begins their usual bevy of contact tracing to determine if anyone else was infected. The Nationals were already down several players due to COVID, but this latest positive test pushed them over the edge into being unable to play. Since the season literally just started and the League has other games to get to, it is possible they won’t be able to put together a Mets versus Nationals game in time for the weekend. However, since the Mets and the Nationals are division rivals based relatively close together, it should be fairly easy to reschedule the game within the next week or so. Hopefully, whenever the game is rescheduled, the Nationals have their roster together, as fans were anticipating a pitcher’s showdown between the Mets’ Jacob deGrom and the Nationals’ Max Scherzer.
