Fans are still sore about the sign stealing thing.

You never want to be the away team on someone else’s field. The grass feels different, the hot dog vendor is in a weird place, and of course, virtually none of the fans in the stands are there to see you play. Just being an away team is stressful enough as it is, but as the Astros have shown us, it can get worse.

On Monday, the Houston Astros were visiting Angel Stadium to play against the Los Angeles Angels, where they were met with some seriously hardcore hazing from the Angels fans in the stands. For a large portion of the game, every move the Astros made was met with taunts, jeers, and sarcastic signs. At once point, during the sixth inning, a fan lobbed an entire inflatable trash can onto the field. In addition to the simple fact of not being the home team, the Astros are still a sore spot for many baseball fans due to allegations of cheating and their involvement in the sign-stealing scandal.

“You can tell the amount of hostility and the amount of hatred in the stands,” Astros manager Dusty Baker said after the game, which the Astros lost 7-6. “How many in the stands have never done anything wrong in their life? We paid the price for it. How many people have not cheated on a test or whatever at some point in time. I mean it’s easy if you live in glass houses, but I don’t think anybody lives in glass houses.

“I think that sometimes we need to look at ourselves before you spew hate on somebody else. It’s a sad situation for America, to me, when you hear things — I mean what are the kids supposed to think in the stands? And some of them are kids that are following their parents. It’s sad to me. People make mistakes. We paid for ours, and I wish they’d leave it alone.”
