Experienced, calming, and knowledgeable; he’s basically perfect.

Ever since TV personality Alex Trebek passed away at the age of 80 back in November, Sony Pictures Entertainment has been employing a stable of rotating guest hosts for Trebek’s former stomping grounds, daytime game show Jeopardy!. So far, reactions to these guest hosts have ranged from “meh” to “no thanks,” and all the while the all-important question continues to loom: who’s going to host Jeopardy! for the long-haul? Well, if you asked a very particular group of 171,374 people (and counting), the answer would be LeVar Burton.

For several months now, a petition has been running on Change.org requesting that Sony make the longtime television star the next host of Jeopardy!, citing his years of experience in the entertainment industry, his notable star power, and his own expansive knowledge of random trivia.

“Between hosting 21 seasons of the educational Reading Rainbow, playing the brainiac engineer Geordi La Forge on Star Trek: the Next Generation, and filling the roll of Kunta Kinte in the ever important mini-series Roots, LeVar Burton has inspired and shaped the minds of several generations of trivia-loving nerds,” the petition blurb reads.

This desire came to a head when the man himself posted a link to the petition on his personal Twitter, saying “Leaving this here in the event that the powers that be are listening.”

Following Burton’s post, a wave of fresh support has come out for both him and the Change.org petition, including endorsements from some of Burton’s fellow celebrities.

“When is Jeopardy going to get it? The public wants @levarburton to host the show!” wrote Burton’s former Star Trek co-star Brent Spiner.

“I think LeVar Burton should host Jeopardy! As Geordi La Forge. And the buzzers should be phasers. And Data should be the judge. And it should be in space. And just be Star Trek,” joked Late Show host Stephen Colbert.

Currently, the show’s runners have yet to comment on either the petition or Burton’s interest.
