Gregg Williams blew it with a poorly-timed blitz.

I’m admittedly not a be-all-end-all expert in the ways of football. That being said, even I know that if your play results in a 46-yard touchdown for the other team, you messed up something fierce. Granted, I’m not sure that’d be a fire-worthy offense, but hey, I’m not in charge of the Jets, and the folks who are probably have more reason to be upset.

At the tail-end of the Jets’ Sunday game against the Las Vegas Raiders, the team’s defensive coordinator Gregg Williams made a bit of a confusing call. There was 13 seconds left on the clock, and the Jets were up by 4 points. It seemed like a good time to play it safe and kill the clock, which is why fans were so confused when Williams called for an all-out blitz. This poorly-timed call left the Jets’ cornerback, rookie Lamar Jackson, on his own against the Raiders’ Henry Ruggs III. When the snap came, Derek Carr passed the ball to Ruggs, and Jackson just couldn’t stop him as he ran the ball all the way to the other end, scoring a 46-yard touchdown and swiping the game out from under the Jets at 31-28.

With this new loss, the Jets’ losing streak continues at 0-12. After the fact, Williams’ call drew intense scrutiny from both team and staff members, with one of the most vocal grillings coming one of the team’s captains, safety Marcus Maye. After a play that disastrous, there was basically no way the team could keep Williams on staff without inviting an angry mob of fans upon themselves, so the call was made, and Williams was officially let go.

Surprisingly, the only person who isn’t overtly mad at Williams is Lamar Jackson, who said it was his own fault for not executing the play properly. “I heard the call, and I gotta execute it,” Jackson said. “I didn’t execute it to the best of my ability or how I wanted to. It’s tough, but at the same time, I also know that call is not going to define me or my career.”
