The Oscars 2024 witnessed a showstopping performance that captivated audiences worldwide: “I’m Just Ken,” a dazzling dance number choreographed by the renowned Mandy Moore. Despite not winning an actual Oscar, this electrifying performance stole the spotlight, showcasing the collaborative efforts of talented artists and performers.

“I’m Just Ken” featured a cast of sixty-two dancers, including Ncuti Gatwa and Slash, and was meticulously crafted within a tight timeframe of just one week. From intensive rehearsals to last-minute adjustments, Moore’s choreography brought to life the essence of the song, infusing it with energy and creativity.

The performance, inspired by Ryan Gosling and Greta Gerwig’s vision, incorporated elements of whimsy and nostalgia, paying homage to classic Hollywood musicals while adding a modern twist. Moore, drawing from her extensive experience in dance and choreography, seamlessly integrated intricate moves and formations, elevating the spectacle to new heights.

Working closely with Gosling, who not only embraced the role of Ken but also contributed valuable insights, Moore brought his vision to fruition. From the inception of the idea to the final execution, Gosling’s creative input played a pivotal role in shaping the performance’s narrative and dynamics.

Despite the challenges posed by the circular stage and last-minute props, including giant Barbie doll heads, Moore and her team persevered, ensuring that every detail was executed flawlessly. The incorporation of Busby Berkeley-style choreography added a touch of glamour and sophistication, further enhancing the spectacle’s visual appeal.

Gerwig’s vision of involving the entire audience in the performance added an interactive element, encouraging participation and engagement. Through a recorded video message, attendees were invited to join in the festivities, creating a sense of unity and excitement within the Dolby auditorium.

Simu Liu, who played a Ken in the film and participated in the performance, praised Moore’s exceptional choreography and the collaborative spirit of the cast. Despite initial nerves, the cast delivered a breathtaking performance that left audiences exhilarated and enthralled.
