Idaho Man Breaks World Record for Wet Sponges to the Face

Who even comes up with these records?

One Mister David Rush, resident of Boise, Idaho, wanted to spread the good word about STEM education to the populace. Unfortunately, just saying you care about STEM education doesn’t draw that much attention. Luckily, Rush has a tried-and-true means of garnering attention: breaking world records. Over the years, Rush has broken over 100 Guinness world records, usually the most inane ones, to get the spotlight on himself and his ideals. This time, his weapon of choice was sponges.

The world record for most wet sponges to the face 30 seconds was 36 (for a team of two). With the help of friend Jonathan Hannon, Rush stood in the streets of his Boise neighborhood primed and ready to get wet. Hannon threw a total of 54 sponges in the 30-second time limit, and Rush successfully maneuvered into 43 of them, breaking the previous record.

Don’t worry, every safety precaution was taken before the record was attempted; Rush and Hannon made sure their hands were clean, and that the water and sponges were clean as well. Plus, as Rush puts it, “There is also no evidence that COVID-19 has ever been spread by a thrown wet sponge,” so they were fine.
