Fourth Season of ‘Stranger Things’ Dated for May
The penultimate season will be broken up into two volumes.
Stranger Things is, debatably, the show that really put Netflix on the fast track to its current ubiquity. After the premier of its first season in 2016, Netflix subscriptions skyrocketed, and no other show that has premiered on the service since has broken its incredible viewership records. Stranger Things is gradually inching toward a permanent conclusion, but the next step on that journey is going to be a big one.
Details were released today about the long awaited fourth season of Stranger Things. This new season will be premiering on May 27, but rather than releasing all at once, it will be released in two separate volumes, with the second one releasing on July 1. This new season is twice the length of all previous seasons, with double the total runtime.
“With nine scripts, over eight-hundred pages, almost two years of filming, thousands of visual effects shots, and a runtime nearly twice the length of any previous season, Stranger Things 4 was the most challenging season yet, but also the most rewarding one,” The Duffer Brothers, the show’s creators, said in a press letter on Netflix’s news blog.

“It’s also the beginning of the end,” they continued. “Seven years ago, we planned out the complete story arc for Stranger Things. At the time, we predicted the story would last four to five seasons. It proved too large to tell in four, but — as you’ll soon see for yourselves — we are now hurtling towards our finale. Season 4 will be the penultimate season; season 5 will be the last.”
