Way back in 2009, acclaimed filmed director James Cameron released Avatar, a CGI science-fiction epic that took the world by storm and became one of the highest-grossing commercial films in history. Since then, Cameron has been trying to get a sequel off the ground, with it originally intended to release in 2014, but delay after delay kept it from materializing. Finally, though, after 13 years, the sequel to Avatar is on the way.

At the ongoing CinemaCon, where major motion picture studios and producers debuted sneak peaks of their next big projects, attendees were treated to the first footage of the Avatar sequel, which has been named Avatar: The Way of Water. The original film was produced by Fox, but since Fox is now under the Disney banner, so too is the Avatar franchise. While the footage didn’t contain any dialogue or hints to the film’s story, it did show much of the high-spec CGI environments of the alien world of Pandora, as well as its inhabitants, the blue-skinned Na’vi.

Like the first film, Avatar: The Way of Water is a 3D production, with the CinemaCon attendees given 3D glasses to watch the promo footage. According to Cameron, who gave a pre-recorded statement before the footage was shown, this movie is “designed for the biggest screen and the most immersive 3D available,” and that he “set out to test the limits of what cinema can do.”

Since children have literally been born and raised in the time between these films, Disney will be re-releasing the first Avatar in theaters on September 23 to get everyone back up to speed. As for Avatar: The Way of Water, it’s slated to hit theaters right on time for the holiday season on December 16.
