Despite her upcoming role in Ti West’s highly anticipated slasher MaXXXine, Elizabeth Debicki has confessed that she is not a fan of the horror genre. The actress, known for her roles in The Crown and Tenet, shared her aversion to horror films in a recent interview, revealing that her fondness for the genre ended during her teenage years.

“Like every teenager, I went to sleepovers and birthday parties and got scared with people,” Debicki told PEOPLE. “I think my horror-watching days ended one day when I was watching — I can’t remember [which movie] — with my best friend. We were 16 and her dad, classic, went around the house and knocked on the window and scared the shit out of us.”

Debicki reflected on her experience, saying, “I was like, I never need to be that scared again. I’m a low-risk individual in life. I don’t like rollercoasters, I don’t like horror films. My job injects enough adrenaline into me on a daily basis, and so I generally avoid them.”

The actress admitted that while horror films can lead to “remarkable acting performances,” she does not actively seek them out. “And if someone’s like, ‘Let’s watch this,’ I’m like, ‘Absolutely not,'” she added. Debicki also confessed that she is still reeling from the impact of Ari Aster’s Hereditary. “I watched Hereditary and I was like, ‘Well, I’ll never recover from that.'”

In MaXXXine, the sequel to X, Debicki stars as Elizabeth Bender, a filmmaker who casts Mia Goth’s Maxine Minx in the sequel to her indie horror film. Set in 1985 Los Angeles, the film follows Goth’s character as she becomes the target of a mysterious night stalker.

West has teased that MaXXXine will take unexpected turns, describing it as a “very decadent world” with an “aggressive” atmosphere, and hinting that the film will conclude the Maxine era, though possibilities for future expansions remain. The film is set to be released on July 5.

Debicki’s presence in MaXXXine may be surprising given her personal feelings about the genre, but her role promises to add a unique dimension to the film’s narrative.
