And here I thought Gotham City couldn’t get any grimier.

Over the weekend, DC ran the DC FanDome, a virtual convention featuring all sorts of fun tidbits about DC-adjacent media. Some standouts included panels with actors and creators, Q&A sections, and of course, a big ol’ heaping helping of trailers for projects new and old. Some of the new trailers released include Wonder Woman 1984, a new Suicide Squad film, a Suicide Squad video game, and of course, a new trailer for tall, dark, and gritty himself, Batman. Specifically, the new iteration of Batman, independent of any existing DC cinematic universe canon.

The new film, simply titled The Batman, the Dark Knight is once again crusading against crime on the nighttime streets of Gotham City, which, if you can believe it, actually looks even grimier and grittier than most previous incarnations. This particular adventure is set relatively early in Bruce Wayne’s crime-fighting career, as he’s only been Batman for about two years. Several classic members of the rogues gallery will be making an appearance in the film, including Catwoman, the Penguin, and the Riddler, as Batman attempts to solve a bizarre murder mystery and delve deep into Gotham’s corrupt government.

When it was announced that the new face of Bruce Wayne would be Robert Pattinson, well-known for his role in the Twilight series, some fans were a little upset, believing the guy who played Edward Cullen was a bad fit (and also noting the irony of a former vampire playing Batman). Since the trailer’s release, though, the zeitgeist seems to have shifted toward the positive, with the reveal trailer on YouTube accumulating over 13 million views as of writing and 644,000 likes. Also, apparently Pattinson trained in Brazilian jiu-jitsu for this role, so he ain’t doing this half-heartedly.

The Batman is slated to hit theaters some time in 2021.
