I never thought the day would come when I’d be pumped for product placement.

In 1996, General Mills got a wacky idea in their heads: take a copy of the hit shooter DOOM, replace the demons with snot monsters, the guns with zappy beams, and the blood-stained marine with a dude in Chex armor. This was Chex Quest, a free CD-ROM game that was included in boxes of Chex cereal. Since it was built out of a game that everyone agreed was pretty good, Chex Quest managed to obtain a surprisingly dedicated cult following, even winning an award for advertising effectiveness. Weird for a DOOM clone made of cereal, but hey, it was fun. Now, 24 years later, Chex Quest has returned in (relatively) high definition, complete with advertising campaign.

General Mills released Chex Quest HD on PC gaming platform Steam on Monday for the low, low price of jack squat. Yep, it’s a free game, with the five levels of the original completely rebuilt in Unreal Engine 4. It still plays pretty similarly to the old version, except now the characters talk and you can look up. I’d call that an all-around improvement. The game even has split-screen multiplayer for up to four players, and by using Steam’s Remote Play feature, you can play online with a friend.

But what about that advertising campaign I mentioned? Well, when you first download the game, the only character you have is the OG Chex Warrior, Fred Chexter. However, there are five other members of the Chex Mix Squad you can unlock and play as. How do you unlock them? Simple, buy Chex Mix. Check your local grocery and convenience stores for specially-marked bags of Chex Mix, and you can find codes on the back that’ll unlock the other characters. Or, if you’re lazy, just go on the Steam forums and copy/paste the codes someone wrote out for everyone. I guess the campaign has a bit of a fatal flaw in that sense, but in fairness, I got a craving for Chex Mix after playing and went and bought a bag this morning, so I guess it still works?
