Lobo Football Welcomes Back Mendenhall, Aiming for New Heights in the Gridiron Journey

The University of New Mexico proudly announces the appointment of Bronco Mendenhall as the new head football coach, marking a significant milestone for the Lobos’ football program. Mendenhall, a seasoned coach with an impressive track record, is set to bring his wealth of experience and leadership to guide the team into a new era of success.

Bronco Mendenhall, previously at the helm of football programs at Virginia and BYU, boasts a remarkable coaching career with a 135-81 record and 14 bowl appearances in 17 seasons. His return to the Lobos is a homecoming of sorts, as Mendenhall served as the defensive coordinator for Rocky Long’s Lobos from 1998 to 2002. During this period, Mendenhall and Long pioneered the renowned 3-3-5 defense, instrumental in shaping the “Loboback” position, a hybrid of linebacker and safety.

Lobo fans hold a special connection with Mendenhall, considering his pivotal role in the development of the Loboback concept. Notably, Brian Urlacher, an iconic figure in UNM football, emerged from this defensive strategy, achieving a first-round draft pick status and having his jersey number 44 retired by the University of New Mexico.

Mendenhall’s commitment to the Lobos is solidified with a five-year deal, and he is determined to guide the team to its first winning season since 2016. The University of New Mexico anticipates a renewed sense of enthusiasm and competitiveness under Mendenhall’s guidance as he steps into his role as head football coach.
