“Arby’s: we have the heats.”

Did people make a habit of torturing themselves with spicy food before the year 2000? Ghost peppers didn’t start showing up in western food until around then, and ever since then, it seems folks can’t resist attempting to inflict the maximum amount of Scoville-rated heat upon themselves without passing out. It’s a strange trend to be sure, but a profitable one; lots of fast food joints these days have been crafting spicy challenges to tantalize and torment potential challengers, the latest of which comes from Arby’s.

Starting today and until February 6, select Arby’s locations are offering the “Diablo Dare,” a fried chicken sandwich or smoked brisket sandwich layered with the spiciest fixings Arby’s could get their mitts on. This includes ghost pepper jack cheese, an undisclosed spicy seasoning, fire-roasted jalapenos, and Diablo BBQ sauce, all served on a toasted red chipotle bun. Considering a solitary ghost pepper is enough to knock many people on their butts, this ain’t a sandwich for those who lack commitment, and Arby’s management has made this clear.

“This is not a sandwich for the faint of heart,” Patrick Schwing, Arby’s chief marketing officer, said in a public statement. “Everyone in QSR says they have a spicy option, but our research tells us that consumers are disappointed by fast food claims of spicy. We took that as a challenge by making sure all types of spicy, the hot, the numbing and the lingering, are combined to make the Diablo Dare a true test of how much heat you can handle.”

As a sign of sportsmanship, every $5.99 order of a Diablo Dare sandwich will come with one free small vanilla milkshake to quench the agonizing flames. At least, assuming the milkshake machine isn’t busted. Arby’s is also encouraging customers to take video of their Diablo Dare attempt and post it on TikTok as part of the “Diablo Dare Hashtag Challenge,” which will have its own effect filter starting January 18.
