Mayweather Comments on McGregor’s Latest Retirement
Mayweather has hopes for another comeback.
Here’s a quick story for you: back in 2017, I knew a guy who worked at a call center for a cable company. For almost a month straight, all anyone was calling in for was to request to Floyd Mayweather versus Conor McGregor fight. It was non-stop, “I wanna watch the fight, I wanna watch the fight.” To say Mayweather versus McGregor was one of the biggest pay-per-view sporting events in history would be an understatement, and as a result of that fight (and Mayweather’s tenth-round TKO victory), the two have become intertwined in each other’s lives and careers. This is why, when McGregor made a surprising announcement on Saturday, Mayweather saw it as his duty to chime in.
On Saturday, McGregor announced on his Instagram that he was formally retiring from the UFC, saying that “the game just does not excite me.” This announcement was made alongside a picture of a cute cake he received to commemorate the occasion. This would probably be a bigger deal if this wasn’t the third time in his career that he’s retired, but nevertheless, it’s always head-turning to see a big name bowing out.
However, Mayweather, not being one to let his fated rival walk away unhindered, visited the comments section of McGregor’s post and left a little invitation for the retiree. “If I’m not mistaken, didn’t you tell Mike Tyson you could beat me if we fought a second time? Now you’re quitting! I thought you wanted to beat the best? Well, if you decide to come back, I will be waiting to punish you again.”
Mayweather himself is currently retired for real, barring a few exhibition matches, but in prior interviews, he noted that if anyone could bring him out of retirement, it’d be McGregor.
“If I see an opportunity where I can entertain and have a little fun and make $600 million, why not?,” Mayweather said in an interview with FightHype. “And if I was to come back, why come back and fight a fighter that only can sell out little cities? I like to face guys that got countries behind them. If I am gonna do something, it’s got to be worth it.”
