Stadiums may be opening, but no one’s playing yet.

While some football stadiums have begun to resume their normal operations, or at least make plans to do so, there won’t be any football going on in any of them for at least a while longer. According to ESPN, the NFL has no intent of letting its players return to their team facilities or stadiums until, at the very earliest, the next training camp. This doesn’t really illuminate anyone, though, since a lot of training camp dates are still up in the air.

Additionally, according to a memo sent by NFL commissioner Roger Goodell on Tuesday, whenever training camps do resume, they’re going to be strictly divided. All teams will be required to hold training camps exclusively on their home turf. This means no Away camps, and no joint training sessions between teams. According to Goodell, conducting the camps like this will eliminate viral risk factors for players and staff, including travel and maintaining more than one training facility.

For some teams, this isn’t a big deal. The Carolina Panthers, who have trained every year at Wofford College in Spartanburg, South Carolina since 1995, were on board with the decision. “We are aware of the league’s decision regarding training camp and support its goal of ensuring the safety of fans, players, coaches and staff,” said Panthers vice president of communications and external affairs, Steven Drummond. “We value our longstanding relationship with Wofford College and the Spartanburg area and look forward to returning in 2021.”

Other teams, however, are in more complicated situations. The Raiders, which recently moved from Oakland to Las Vegas, were planning to hold their camp in Napa near the Bay Area, but will now have to move all operations to a new facility in Henderson, Nevada.

There is still no word on when the football season can begin properly.
