If the speeches go too long, just cut the feed!

So, we have our full list of nominations for this year’s Emmys. Personally, I’m holding out hope for the cast of The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel, because it’s pretty much the only consistently nominated show I’ve watched. But there’s a big ol’ elephant in the room: how are we supposed to hold a big, fancy award ceremony with an audience numbering in the thousands in the middle of a viral pandemic? Answer: we don’t. Plug in your cheapo webcams, we’re going digital.

According to an official letter signed by the Emmys executive producers, including host Jimmy Kimmel, the entire event will be conducted over webcams and mics from the stars’ homes.

“As you’ve probably guessed, we’re not going to be asking you to come to the Microsoft Theatre in downtown LA on September 20th,” part of the letter, picked up by Variety, reads. “This year, it’s still going to be TV industry’s biggest night out… but we’ll come to you!”

The letter continues, “We are assembling a top notch team of technicians, producers and writers to work closely with Jimmy Kimmel and with you and your team, to make sure that we can film with you (and loved ones or whomever else you choose to be with) at your home, or another location of your choice. We’re going to make you look fabulous – we’re exploring the cutting edge of technology to allow to use good cameras and lighting and look forward to working with you to produce your unique ‘on screen” moments.’”

A few details still need to be worked out, such as whether some sections of the presentation will be live or pre-recorded, whether the winners will be informed beforehand, and if attendees will dress up, though on that last point, apparently the producers are recommending “come as you are, but make an effort!” Basically, that means if you’re gonna dress down, just wear really nice casual clothes.

The Emmys are still on track for September 20, 2020.
